You can enliven your home's concrete surfaces using epoxy paints, acid stains, water-based stains, and scoring techniques.

Or maybe you plan to have some new concrete installed and you want to add a decorative touch. Acid-based concrete stains are popular for coloring concrete surfaces. They react chemically react with the cement to produce permanent color with a variegated or mottled appearance like that of marble. The results are a natural looking, elegant surface. Acid stains, available in eight to ten different colors, mainly come in browns, greens, and reddish earth tones. The cost is about $60 to $70 per gallon. A gallon covers 300 to 400 square feet. After staining, a coat of clear concrete sealer will really bring out the colors and beauty.

Water-based concrete stains are a nontoxic alternative to acid stains. These stains don't react chemically with the concrete. Instead, they are absorbed into the surface pores like a dye. Water-based stains come in a wide array of colors, too. You can find just about any color in the spectrum and create a vibrant and consistent appearance. They cost about the same as acid-based stains and cover the same amount of area.

If you want to do more than just stain or color the concrete, you can try scoring techniques to create designs in the surface. You might want to make your concrete look like a tile floor, for example. You can use your imagination. An angle grinder with a 4-inch grinding or cutting wheel is used for scoring concrete. Draw the pattern on the concrete first and make sure you’re satisfied with it before you use the tool. Scoring is irreversible! You can rent an angle grinder at just about any tool rental shop.

Epoxy paints are an excellent coating for garage and basement floors. Many commercial buildings have epoxy coatings on their floors because they are durable and resistant to chemical spills. They also make the floor look good. Recently, however, it has become popular for residential use. An increasing number of colors are available. Applying an epoxy paint to a floor is not difficult, but surface preparation is important and may take time, depending on the condition of the floor. Epoxy paints are also available in a water-based form, making it safer for the do-it-yourselfer and perfect for indoor applications. Epoxy paints cost a little more than stains. For a 400-square-foot garage, you'll need about $200 for materials.
