being used, or that’s in an indeterminate state of possibly being
discarded but “we might need it later,” makes its way into the garage.
Don’t you wish you had room in your garage for your car? Especially when
you have to scrape ice off the windshield and remove eight inches of
snow off the top, or when it’s 90 degrees and the interior is like a
sauna, don’t you wish you could park your car in the garage? What
happened to all the space in there?

for storage. Paints, oils, old toys, bicycles, a box of stuff from
college, unfinished projects, old dishes, and so forth all tend to
gravitate toward the garage. If you don’t have a storage shed for garden
tools or woodworking tools, they will clutter up the garage, too. You
might even have a lawn mower and a scooter in your garage. How can you
get your car to fit?
Now is the time to make room in the garage for your car.
Start cleaning out your garage by first making sure that any hazardous
or poisonous substances are out of the reach of children and are sealed
properly. You might lock pesticides, paint thinner, and related items in
a cabinet.
Get bike hangers at your local hardware or bicycle store and hang your
bicycles upside down from the ceiling to open up more space on the
ground.
Buy some good shelving, either open or with doors, for your garage.
Depending on your preferences, you can try mounting shelves on the walls
with brackets or installing floor-to-ceiling shelving. Any type of
heavy-duty shelving will work. Give each member of the family a section
for storing their personal items. Any valuables and important items
should be stored on a high shelf to avoid any possible damage from water
in the event of flooding.
Go through all those cans of paint and stain and toss out the old ones.
Don’t forget to toss out the old paint brushes, too. Keep the good ones
on the shelf with the paint. Collect all the screws and nuts and bolts
and sort them into cans or bottles and put them on a shelf. Put your
large tools where they belong and your small tools in a tool box. If you
don’t have one, you can buy an inexpensive plastic tool box.
Put car care items such as soap, wax, oil, and rags (the antifreeze
should be in the locked cabinet with other hazardous substances)
together on a shelf. Also, if you don’t have a shed, you’ll want to
designate a shelf for your gardening tools. You don’t want to leave them
outside in the weather or cluttering up the laundry room.
At first this may seem like a lot of work, but the next time it rains,
you’ll be glad you can take your time getting into your car. You won’t
have to make a mad dash through the rain to get your umbrella out of the
backseat. You can stay dry and warm while putting your lunch and other
items into the passenger seat before getting in the car to drive to
work.
